International Print Exchange, theme: MADONNA

Participate in an international print exchange

Theme: Artists are to present images about the Madonna, the Virgin Guadalupe, Mother Mary, Marian subjects, motherhood, nurturing, etc.
Eligible Media: Collograph, Digital/photographic-based, Intaglio, Letter press, Lithography, Monoprint, Relief, Serigraphy, or any combination of these methods are accepted.

Paper Size: 8 x 11 inches (images may be any size, up to the edge of the total paper size) Please include glassine sheets (also 8 x 11 inches) between each image to assure no offset of images onto each other.

Edition Requirements: 15 prints, Signed and numbered (1/15, 2/15, 3/15...etc.)
Labelling Images: Write (in pencil) artist name, date, title, media on the back lower right corner of each print.
Participation fee: $20 US domestic/$25 international - outside of US. Make checks, money orders payable toTeresa Parker.

Open Studio - report

Three girls looking pleased with their printmaking efforts at our recent Open Studio, with excellent instruction and demonstration provided by the very accomplished printmaker Colin Beaumont. from Leven.

(photograph above) showing Colin, having just run one of his excellent collagraph prints through the etching press.

Apparently the print workshop was busy for all of the four hours that we were open to the public.

Of course the warm drinks and nibbles, helped engender a convivial atmosphere in this cold weather we have been experiencing of late but there certainly was a lot of interest in the huge range of artworks that were on exhibition. Additionally greetings cards that artist members had for sale were extremely popular with visitors.

This is a photo of the cards that member Babs Pease, had available for purchase. These are mainly made using lino cut as well as some that she has had made into reproductions of other artworks.

Really compared to what you can buy on the high street, her cards are such a delight. You can see more information about Babs at her WEBSITE.

In fact I was lucky enough to be in a position to buy one of Babs lovely lino prints of Penguins (above), which I got to give to one of my favorite nephews, as he is crackers about Penguins.

Artists have engaged with many aspects of Place,from their own gardens to their upbringing, incidental and particularlandscapes and buildings, from remote woodland to major cities. The media usedinclude, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, digital images,screenprinting, etching, book formand video.

Using drawing techniques Aileen Stackhouse’s work Treeline referencesplaces along the River Ericht and over the Knockie hill behind Blairgowrie,while Malize McBride’s abstractlandscape ‘Elie , geologically’ references the varied geology of Elie in Fife. Mary Golden's two works ‘Evening Hill’ & ‘Rising Mist’ use paint and drawing respectively to capture the breathtaking moments when the mist and cloud suddenly clear.

Chris Jenkinson’s painting ‘Sexy Curve’s records the visual overload of one’s senses in New York where in the midst of thisorganised chaos one can find patterns and rhythms. By contrast Astrid Leeson’ssmall delicate painting on plaster'Journey to work’ recordsan often unnoticed place she passes on her way to work.

Various printing processes feature in the exhibition. Dawson Murray uses the etchingprocess to turn the fennel plantof his garden into an abstract dream like space while Thora Clyne’s etchings show details from a chestnut flour mill, centuriesold in Tuscany.

Clare Yarrington’s two screenprints ‘Jammed II & III ‘climb the corners of a Theatre space, suggestive ofthe handhold a climber has on the specific rockface while climbing.

Photography is represented by George Logan’s images “Dark Time’ which are a visual exploration into alandscape of contradiction, of chaos and yet also of a profound mental solace. In direct contrast to this, GilleanHunt represents the bottom of hergarden with her ‘dancing with ....’ abstract plant images.

Margaret Bathgate documents installations of her textile works within the gothic style Memorial Chapel onFalkland Estate. Tricia Anderson has two photographs which aim to capture thefeeling and spirit of Sherrifmuir before during and after a storm and Genie Dee’s photographic work showsmultiple views of Platform 7 at Perth railway station a place she has got toknow rather well .

Digital images are featured by three artists. Emma Herman-Smith creates graphic works exploring the dominance of pylons and tangles of telephone wires in thelandscape. Su Grierson creates digital photographicworks ‘Flatland and DarkForest’ withincorporated texts that suggest anadditional element of experiential or conceptual engagement and Jackie Smith’s digital print ‘Rhew’ refers to a Scottish aquatic loch environment.

Shelagh Atkinson’s screenprints engage with her owncommunist upbringing with images, a book form and video referring to StPetersburg, while Lesley McDermott’s screenprints refer to the placesvisited in her travels as a young woman. Also inspired by travel, themixed media work of Liz Murray refers back to the dance halls of 1920's Paris.

Ann Coomberbrings us the show’s only sculpture ‘The sea is singing’ an abstract piece that refers directly to herexperience on a deserted NorfolkBeach.

The “Not-So-Mini Print” Exhibition and Exchange

Each year, the Artist Proof Gallery (Alberta, Canada) holds a non-juried show and sale to showcase the work of local printmaking artists, and to raise funds towards A/P’s artistic and educational programming.
For this year’s show, A/P is inviting all interested printmakers to submit and edition of ten 15” x 11” prints for exhibition and exchange in the Artist Proof Gallery.

Each participant will receive 8 prints created by other artists, and A/P will retain 2 works from each edition for sale in our studio and gallery.

The exhibition will run from Nov. 30 to Dec. 22, with an opening reception and print exchange to be held on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 from 6:30 to 8:30pm.
Submission requirements:

All interested artists are eligible to participate in this non-juried exhibition. Submissions must include:

An edition of ten 15” x 11” prints

Submission fee of $10 for members and $15 for non-members

Perth Open Studios - up Milnathort way

Once Jane had returned from holidaying in Norway recently (where she used to live for a few years) she made it her business to immediately commence working at FDPW, on relief prints in preparation for the Perth Visual Artists Open Studios. Lots of experimentation starting with shells and then moving on to boats. Her studio is in Milnathort.

THORA CLYNE

Thora has been working on relief prints and woodcuts in the past few months but will no doubt also have paintings on show. I cant help but suspect that 'feline beings' may well feature in her imagery.

Warming up for Open studios (Perth Open Studios)

Me saying that some of the girls at the print workshop are 'warming up' for their open studios is a bit of a laugh really - as in actual fact, they are really working hard at getting prints finished and prepping artworks for their individual open studio events. Thora Clyne has been working on a lovely reduction lino print of a cat and a fish ...............its a good size about 45 x 45 cm I would estimate. Heres a photo of the plate that I got Colin Beaumont to take with his mobile phone a couple of weeks ago. She was still working away on it today. Colin couldnt manage to get to the print workshop today because of flooding near his house or something along those lines ...we missed his company.

Well firstly I must apologize for such a long spell without a post BUT those of you who I encounter at the print workshop will be only too well aware that I have been ploughing away at making my artists book edition. IF and it's a big if....I ever do another artists book edition - it will be an easier format , than that which I have opted for, with this one..............

A few weeks back I asked Caroline Paterson to send me some jpgs because she was going to be exhibiting some works in the Forth Valley Open Studios along with Fiona Clasen, at Bridge of Allan, in the Trossachs. Fiona works using pastels and of course Caroline was exhibiting collagraphs as illustrated below:

Unfortunately I overlooked the posting and now it has 'been and gone' !!. Once again to Caroline - my apologies. I am particularly cross with myself as I like to support up and coming artists (as they say) and I remember admiring her skills using collagraphy right from the beginning when she initially joined the workshop, following undertaking an introductory course with Colin Beaumont.

The International Print Exchange South Korea, is going to be the first print exchange based in South Korea with hopes of gathering an international collection of printmakers together to share, network and exhibit work.  The theme for the 2011 exchange will be "divided."
Artists are to create work related to this theme. As with most themed exhibitions and exchanges, sticking to the theme is not strictly enforced, but is encouraged for the continuity and sophistication of the collection as a whole.
How to Participate: Artists are to send an edition of 15 prints, using traditional (non-digital/photographic) printmaking techniques. Each of the prints sent must be identical to the others. Each artist will get 13 random mixed prints in return. Two prints from each edition will be held by I.P.E.S.K. to be exhibited in at least one gallery in Seoul, South Korea in the spring of 2011. An online gallery will also be created with a list of participating artists and images of all the work.

Guanlan International Print Biennial 2011

I received an email this morning informing me that the deadline for works arrive in Guanlan has been extended to February 25, 2011.

The Guanlan International Print Biennial has been successfully conducted twice by the Guanlan Original Printmaking Base.
Now in its third manifestation, the event takes place once again in 2011. It attained a big success in the previous two biennials- due to the great support of the artists from the entire world.

This exhibition wi l l focus on artistic and academic achievement, and promote the creativity and individuality in the individual artists work and style.
It is hoped that artworks of a high level and superior quality will be selected for the exhibition. Guanlan International Print Biennial seeks to promote the exchange of artists from around the world and that Guanlan International Print Biennial will become the platform and window for people, to understand China, and vice versa.

"Wanderings " Clare Yarrington at the Smith Art Gallery, Stirling

Clares latest solo exhibition is now open to the public and will run until the 13th March.

Clare will be talking about her work in the gallery on Wednesday 19^th January at noon. Everyone welcome, admission free.

The work in this exhibition is built on the pieces she made for the JD Fergusson Arts Award that Clare won in 2009. It has been developed further and also there are some earlier related pieces.

"My theme then was of a journey through the landscape: a walk down from the hills to the sea, along the shore to rocky cliffs and a climb back up to the wide moor above.

Over the last year I have continued to work on certain aspects of this theme, in particular looking more intimately at the rock itself. The series 'Disconnections' and 'Coils' show climbing ropes becoming embedded in the rock like fossils; while some of the climbing figures, which appear to be dancing up the surface of the rock/paper, are gradually being absorbed and becoming as one with the rock.

'Wandering' also includes some earlier pictures that reflect on this theme: they are of other places and other times."

I love this quote from Clare "My wanderings have never been in straight lines."

This sounds like a good opportunity to get a real grasp of the artists concerns and intentions.

Seven libraries in west Fife; June 2010 - June 2011

After a short spell in St Andrews for a 're-fit', the Craft and Information Pods are back out on tour with a new display. As they will spend the next 12 months in a selection of west Fife libraries (details below), it seemed appropriate to fill them with artworks relating in some way to books.

On display is work by Rachel Hazell, Phiona Richards, and Alix Swan (on the left : is an image of her work) who all are influenced by books in their work, but in different ways. The accompanying Information Pod shows a continuous playing slide show of images about the 3 artists; there are samples of materials by Phiona Richards and Alix Swan; and a simple DIY guide to making your own book by Rachel Hazell.

I have included this collage as it is made from 'recycled printmaking elements' including aquatint, relief monoprint, scan of a collagraph / and of a collaged text house, plus a tinted scan of some scrim, (tarlatan) all applied to a paper surface with archival adhesive. Finally some water soluble pastel pencil, was added to bring it all together.

I intend to periodically feature an artist who I feel uses a particular technique or process really well.
I shall start with Spit Bite
I was quite taken with these prints featuring spit bite by Irish print maker Jenny Spain, whose art work I became aware of during the past couple of months. She is a member of one of the longest established print workshops for original prints in Ireland - Graphic Studio in Dublin.
I know only too well how certain issues arise with doing spit bites e.g., when you proof them, they don't seem very dark which can be disappointing, or the acid doesn't seem to be etching into the plate surface very much....and so on......Some advice, in this respect, is available from Emily York on the Magical Secrets website

Although she is using the more toxic resin which of course we no longer use at FDPW the principles are of course the same as in - that the plate is covered with dots which then leave dots of open area, through which the 'acid' will bite through.
With the acrylic resist set up we now have installed at FDPW, we would be using Lascaux acrylic resist, in place of rosin for the aquatint. The resist is sprayed on to metal plate with an airbrush then ferric chloride/ copper sulphate (for which we recently got the recipe from Paul Musgrove) would be brushed on, dripped on, or applied with a squeeze bottle to create soft tones and watercolour bleed like marks onto the plate.

Graphic Arts Prize of the City of Bietigheim-Bissingen
Inaugurated in 1989, on the occasion of Bietigheim-Bissingen’s 1200th anniversary, the Graphic Arts Competition for the »Linocut Today« prize is now held triennially.
In 2010, when it will take place for the 8th time, the purpose of the competition will also be to support contemporary artists working in linocut and to encourage others to use this technique.
Furthermore, the Municipal Gallery has concentrated its collecting and exhibition activities on the linocut. The commitment to this artistic practice is based on the fact that Bietigheim- Bissingen is home to Armstrong DLW AG, a company which has been producing linoleum for more than 100 years. This company is generously supporting the competition again this time.

The prizes are endowed with € 5,000, € 3,000, and € 2,000. The award-winning works will be purchased by the Municipal Gallery for its collection. The jury will also decide on three additional purchases from among the competition entries. The preliminary round will be carried out on the basis of reproductions; originals entered without prior request will not be accepted.

For this preliminary round up to three works may be submitted,

either as colour photos or as computer printouts.

The works must have been created exclusively or mainly in the linocut printing technique and should not be more than two years old.

All the selected works will be presented in an exhibition at the Municipal Gallery.

Lahti Miniprint FINLAND 2010

I mentioned to a few people while at the print workshop over the past couple of weeks YES PEOPLE HAVE BEEN COMING IN - DESPITE THE BIG SNOW that I would post some information here about this triennial print competition, exhibition. I have been in it one time ...., the second time I didn't get selected - having my works completely the wrong size ( I misinterpreted the size guidelines) didn't help but you don't always get selected for these things in any event.

They do a very nice exhibition and excellent catalog so I feel it's worthwhile taking the trouble to submit works.

Here's a couple of images from when the event was last held. All kinds of techniques are included and they seem to have a fairly broad mind, as to what they will select.

Up to 3 prints can be submitted.

Entry fee is 40 Euros which is £35.50 as the currency rate, currently stands ( it used to be about half of the equivalent sterling rate, eek !!)

Here are some photos from the week 2 of Robert and Carols Masterclass printmaking course . Thanks Catherine King, for sharing your photos with us. Looks interesting I must say.

Carol and Robert shared their extensive knowledge on screen printing with gouaches, acrylics, watercolours, process colours, organic pigment pastes, pigments and a range of artists materials such as varnishes, thickener, retarders and screenprinting paste.

Carol showed participants how to use stencils to the maximum, how to do washes with filler and how best to use screen painting fluid. Different types of paper stencil, light sensitive stencils and reversals were also explored.

Preparing and degreasing screens, applying stencils, cross-linking theory, registration and printing on different substrates, as well as cleaning meshes were also covered.

Masterclasses in new intaglio techniques 10.00am – 4.00pm.

How to etch plates using liquid roll on photopolymer emulsion.

Images can be made from photographs, digital files or from drawn artwork; all can be etched onto the metal plate and then printed using conventional intaglio techniques.

You will work on A5 plates (148mm x 210mm) so please make your artworks to this scale and proportions. All images should have good tonal contrast with limited mid-tones, neither too light nor too dark.

Digital techniques are extremely useful for making photo positives for photopolymer etching. A good positive image on film (i.e. Inkjet acetate) is essential.

If you have digital files of finished artwork they should be sized appropriately for the A5 plates we will be using, as the technique relies on a contact exposure with the plate.

Bring along discs, USB sticks etc., with your saved artworks or bring your original artwork for scanning.

Hand drawn: images on tracing paper can be used as can drafting film.

Images on paper can be in most media, as long as they have good strong blacks and a range of tones. All drawing materials should be reasonably opaque. If you have the facilities at home then scan the images you make and save them to disc or USB stick and bring with you.

If you are unsure what kind of artwork to bring along then please bring a good range of source material with you to work with on the day.*

Bring brushes of various shapes and sizes.

These unique two days of monoprinting opportunities are led by artist/printmaker Eugen Jarych from Dundee, who will bring his own special, creativity and enthusiasm to our workshop. His unique vision, energy and expertise will provide two days of memorable printmaking!

The two masterclasses will introduce you to the special joys of monoprinting in our Dunfermline workshop. You will also come to appreciate the practical aspects of working with others in our artist led organisation and feel comfortable working in this space.

If you are already familiar with some monoprinting techniques, these two days will provide new and stimulating ways to print as you are introduced to a variety of techniques, some old and some new.

Monoprints: A “painterly” immediate print medium combining drawing, painting and printmaking to produce unique images.

Mary Johnston has been in touch and wanted to let the FDPW membership know about something called CAD. CAD - has taken over the Glen Gates Gallery from DAM, and intend running 'gallery days' on the 1st Saturday of each month.

The next one is on 5th Dec from 10am to 4 pm at the Glen Gates in Dunfermline. They are inviting artists to take part and show work.

If anyone is interested could they let us know. It is a good chance to meet other artists, network and promote work.

Printmaking with Carol Robertson and Robert Adam (Week 1 of 4)

Aren't we lucky to have this great opportunity to have two such experienced, knowledgeable and affable printmakers to share their expertise with us !! And to have their lovely dog Hugo included in the visit as well !!

Don't know about the rest of you but I was shattered at the end of the day last Saturday and yet I spent most of the time listening watching and occasionally talking ...............BUT......I wasn't the only one. I did feel inspired though and in fact yesterday and at this very moment I am working on making some positives for photo etch exposure tomorrow - that's if I get these finished.
Tatiana Campbell and Anita Hunter, were also on the case yesterday making positives. Anita was really going for it with three layers of positives to hopefully use to make a silkscreen print tomorrow morning at FDPW. Here's a few photos taken by Steve Ratomski, on the day ( thanks for getting those to me, Steve).

Update on Robert Adams and Carol Robertsons Course at FDPW

Master classes by, Carol Robertson and Robert Adam

They were both classically trained in Scotland and then at the Slade where they met in the 1980s. From that strong base they have used their knowledge and inventiveness to develop systems of printmaking which relate closely to classical theory and practice, allow artists to realize their concepts, and make the widest range of marks and effects in the safest and easiest ways possible. The systems make use of modern and classical materials and working methods.

They developed, tested and validated these new systems by collaborating with a wide range of artists. These include Paolozzi, Barns-Graham, Ogilvie, Callander, Rae, Clark, Crowe, Miles, Schmidt, Diethelm and Downie.

In order to make these ways of working available to as many artists as possible worldwide they worked with Evans Vanodine, Lascaux and other professionals to develop modern products and systems. The eighteen innovative printmaking products that they have created in collaboration with Lascaux, Zurich are available from Graphic Chemical (USA), Polymetaal (Holland) , A. P. Fitzpatrick, London, or Intaglio Printmakers, London.

Carol Robertson and Robert Adam share their research and knowledge through the two books they wrote and illustrated which are published by Thames & Hudson, available through www.amazon.co.uk.

One is about screenprinting with water-based artists materials and how to work creatively in a safe way. The other book is about intaglio printmaking techniques such as engraving, mezzotint, drypoint, air abrading, etching, collagraphy and combined techniques, again with an emphasis on non toxic printmaking practice.

Both books also explain how to make photographic, digital, photocopy and autographic positives which can be used in conjunction with light-sensitive processes in screenprinting, etching, air abrading, and collagraphy. The two books, also cover the history, monotyping, collating etc.

Carol has just completed writing a PhD which explains the concepts and research behind the books, again with the aim to share this information with other artists.

C O U R S E
In each of the workshops the theory and practice relating to the new systems will be explained and demonstrated. The sessions will also provide an opportunity to ask questions about the theories, materials, methods, and ways of starting to work in these ways, realizing concepts and reasons for change.
The four sessions are designed to work together. The idea is that after each session artists can explore the subject in their own time before the next session and the following session will provide an opportunity to discuss results and experiences. For example positives can be made after the session on the 14^th and these can be used in combination with the information provided in the following sessions. The sessions will be filmed and extracts used as education material.

Making autographic positives.
Saturday 14th November, 10 – 4.

Make autographic and combination positives for screenprinting, etching, or collagraphy. Use the new materials which were inspired by Corot and Millet’s cliché verres, soft ground collage effects, the sugar lift’s of Picasso, Chagall, and Rouault etchings (made using autographic positives), the etched relief lines of William Blake, monotyping marks, and the reticulated washes of stone and zinc lithography, etc. Combine digital, photographic and photocopy positives and learn how to make and use image ‘maps’.

NOTE There will be a Master class on 'photo etching' (2 sessions) in February 2010 (next year). These will be lead by Paul Musgrove, who has been recommended by Alfons Bytautas, senior etching technician at Edinburgh Print workshop.

Screen Printing.

Saturday November 28th, 10 – 4.
Screenprinting with gouaches, acrylics, watercolours, process colours, organic pigment pastes, pigments and a range of artists materials such as varnishes, thickener, retarders and screenprinting paste. Using stencils to the maximum, washes with filler and using screen painting fluid, different types of paper stencil, light sensitive stencils and reversals. Preparing and degreasing screens, applying stencils, cross-linking theory, registration and printing on different substrates, cleaning meshes will also be covered.

Collagraphy
Saturday December 5th, 10 – 4.

Making collagraphs, photo collagraphs and combined media plates using acrylic media and light sensitive media. Exploring how to make printed effects that are more normally associated with aquatint, open bite, hard ground, painting and soft ground etching. Preparing and degreasing plates, applying media, editing and working into the added media, removing media using a household cleaner, and printing and cleaning plates will also be covered.

Acrylic-resist Etching
Saturday December 12th, 10 – 4.

Using acrylic resists to explore classical etching methods such as linear and the tonal effects of texturing and pitting, traditional methods such as spirit and powder aquatint, stopping-out and light sensitive resists and contemporary methods such as spray aquatint, puncture and additive techniques. Preparing and degreasing plates for resists, applying resists, etching plates using corrosive salts, removing resists using a household cleaner, and printing and cleaning plates will also be covered.

The Public Services Reform Bill, including measures that will bring Creative Scotland into being, will be debated at stage 1 of its consideration in the Scottish Parliament on November 16th. We encourage our members to write to their MSP ahead of the debate and ask them where they stand on Creative Scotland, reminding them that the new agency must acknowledge the unique and crucial contribution of visual and applied artists to Scottish culture and keep their support an utmost priority.

"The visible often seems paramount in the workings of human perception, especially in the modern technological world where what we see increasingly dominates the texture of our experience. We might consider the invisible to be the opposite of the visible, or perhaps as a transparent overlapping or hidden substrate of the visible world:

The ‘Invisible' is an open submission exhibition and invites all forms of art and art practice for consideration, including visual, sound, temporal and performance based works. The exhibition will take place in February 2010 and will be sited in several locations around Dublin city.

Artists are invited to submit proposal-based works and/or existing works. Site-specific proposals may detail a particular site as listed or propose an alternative site. Artists may consider using their own studios and/or sites other than conventional exhibition spaces. Accessibility must be outlined and confirmed in the case of an alternative site being proposed. Artists might also consider restricted accessibility in relation to the context of the work.

Participating venues include Original Print Gallery, Curiosity Cabinet, The Back Loft c/o La Catedral Studios, Digital Hub Development Agency. The Curators may identify additional locations depending on proposals received.

Exhibit at Torpedo Factory Art Centre Dec 2009

This is an exhibition "quickie", as well as easy. These things are good to do if you just feel in the mood to do some little print works (postcard size).

Maybe if you haven't shown in a while or if you could do with adding some shows to your CV.

If you send one postcard it will cost you 10 dollars (US). When I have previously submitted prints to exhibitions biennial type events - I never send cash through my bank because it costs £25.00 to do that kind of transaction, which I think is utterly EXTORTIONATE in the context of current electronic communications.

Whereas, Paypal, hardly costs anything at all which is something that I wish all of these exhibition 'hosts' would get together. I'ts not that difficult (duh) I have taken the step I might add, of suggesting this to some of them
I usually order foreign currency of the country involved and then enclose it in the envelope. I know there's always a first time............... but so far (and thats after a fair few years) - it's usually been OK.
Anyway the torpedo factory is a place based in Alexandria in Virginia.

Call for Entries - Mini Print 2009

Artlink are calling for entries for its popular annual Mini Print Exhibition. This is a great selling opportunity for artists as Mini Print is held in the run up to Christmas.

This is an open submissions exhibition with no selection process, so everyone who enters gets their work displayed. Artists are invited to submit work in any printed medium, please see submission guidelines for exact criteria on what we can and cannot accept.

As this is a mini print exhibition, the total size of the work must not be bigger than 25cm in either direction - to allow us to mount work to fit within our frames.

Required with all entries is a fee of £20.00 per artist to cover mounting/framing and return postage of unsold work.

A maximum of five prints can be entered per participant, two of which will be mounted, framed and displayed on the Gallery wall. The remaining prints will still be for sale and available for viewing in the gallery browser and also for replacing work sold from the wall.

The closing date for entries is Thursday 12th November 2009

and Mini Print 2009 will run from early December 2009 until end of January 2010.
